Signs your dog is cold are easy to miss once the heat is on and the evenings turn dark by five. A dog who curls into a tight ball, shivers by the door or suddenly refuses the second half of a walk may simply be telling you the season has changed.

This guide covers the common cold signals, which dogs feel the chill most, when a hoodie or sweatshirt helps, and the warning signs that mean it is time to call your vet. Small changes to your routine go a long way toward a comfortable, healthy winter.

Signs Your Dog Is Cold: What to Watch For

Most dogs show the same handful of signals when they are chilly. Learn them now, before the first hard freeze.

  • Shivering or trembling, especially at rest
  • A hunched back, tucked tail or tightly curled sleeping position
  • Lifting one paw after another on cold pavement
  • Seeking warm spots, such as heating vents, blankets or your lap
  • Slowing down, stopping or turning for home early on walks
  • Whining or restlessness when it is cold outside

One sign alone may mean nothing. Several together, especially outdoors, usually mean your dog needs more warmth or a shorter walk.

Which Dogs Feel the Cold Most?

Cold tolerance varies a lot. Toy and small breeds lose body heat faster. So do short-coated and thin dogs, puppies and seniors.

Dogs with arthritis, heart disease or other health conditions may also struggle in cold weather. If your dog fits one of these groups, plan shorter outings on the coldest days and ask your vet what is comfortable for them.

Thick double-coated breeds often love winter. Even so, wet fur, wind and long stretches of standing still can chill any dog.

Does My Dog Need a Sweater?

A light layer helps many small and short-coated dogs stay comfortable on cold walks and in drafty rooms. A good fit matters more than thickness.

  • It should be snug but never tight. You should slide two fingers under the neck and chest.
  • Your dog should walk, sit and lie down without pulling or bunching.
  • Choose soft, breathable fabric. Our Country Dog Hoodie is 100% cotton with an all-season thickness and is machine washable.
  • Measure back length, chest and neck, then check the size chart before you order.

Watch for overheating too. If your dog pants, scratches at the fabric or seeks cool floors indoors, take the layer off. Supervise your dog in clothing, and remove anything damp after a walk.

For a lighter layer, the With Dog Sweatshirt in Red is 100% cotton, holds its shape and won't wrinkle. It works well for cool walks and cozy days at home.

Keep Winter Walks Short, Dry and Warm

On very cold or windy days, try two or three short walks instead of one long one. Walk in daylight when you can, and keep moving rather than standing still.

Wet fur pulls heat away fast. After snow, rain or slush, dry your dog right away, especially the belly, legs and paws. A hooded towel like our Hooded Microfiber Dry Towel in Cream absorbs water quickly and doubles as a cozy wrap on chilly days.

Check paws after every walk. Wipe off road salt and de-icers, and look for cracks or redness between the pads.

When to Call the Vet

Mild chill passes quickly once your dog is warm and dry. Some signs need professional care, so call your vet or an emergency clinic if you notice:

  • Strong shivering that does not stop after warming up
  • Weakness, confusion, stiffness or unusual sleepiness
  • Pale or bluish gums
  • Pale, gray, hard or painful skin on the ears, tail or paws
  • Limping, cracked or bleeding paw pads

While you call, move your dog somewhere warm and wrap them in a dry blanket. Avoid heating pads or very hot water, which can burn chilled skin. Your vet can give advice for your dog's breed, age and health.
