Holiday treats, busy weeks and colder days can push one small habit off the list: caring for your pet's teeth. Yet dog and cat dental care is one of the simplest ways to protect their comfort and health at home.

Dental disease is one of the most common problems vets find in adult dogs and cats, and it often starts quietly. The good news is that a gentle routine, a few minutes a day, makes a real difference. Here is how to start, and when to call your vet.

Know the signs worth watching

Plaque builds up on teeth every day. Over time it can harden into tartar and irritate the gums. Many pets hide mouth pain well, so it helps to look closely once a week.

  • Bad breath that does not go away
  • Red, swollen or bleeding gums
  • Yellow or brown buildup along the gumline
  • Dropping food, chewing on one side or eating more slowly
  • Pawing at the mouth, extra drooling or a loose or broken tooth

If you notice any of these, book a vet visit before you start brushing. A sore mouth needs care first, and brushing it can hurt.

Build the brushing habit slowly

Most dogs and cats can learn to accept brushing if you go step by step. Keep sessions short, calm and positive, and stop before your pet gets restless.

  1. Days 1–3: Let your pet lick a little pet gel from your finger.
  2. Days 4–6: Gently lift the lip and touch the outer teeth with your finger.
  3. Week 2: Introduce the brush. Brush a few front teeth, then praise.
  4. Week 3 and on: Work toward the back teeth, where plaque often builds up most.

Daily brushing is ideal, but even a few times a week helps. Pick a quiet time, like after an evening walk, so it becomes part of the day.

Choose gentle tools made for pets

Never use human toothpaste. Some contain ingredients, such as xylitol or fluoride, that are not safe for pets to swallow. Use a gel made for dogs and cats, and a brush that fits a small mouth.

After each use, rinse the brush well with water and let it air dry.

Keep bowls and water fresh

Clean dishes are part of a healthy mouth routine. Food and saliva leave a film on bowls, so wash food and water bowls daily and refill water often. Many pets drink less in cold weather, and fresh water makes the bowl more inviting.

Reward with play, not extra treats

A happy ending makes the next session easier. Instead of a pile of treats after brushing, try a short game. Hide one or two pieces of your pet's regular food and let them sniff it out.

The Flying Duck Nosework Toy has magnetic wing pockets for hiding treats, plus squeakers and crinkle material. It doubles as a tug toy, which makes a fun two-minute reward for dogs. Always supervise play with soft toys.

Be careful with very hard chews, such as bones or antlers, which can crack teeth. Ask your vet which chews suit your pet.

When to call your vet

Home brushing helps prevent buildup, but it cannot remove hardened tartar or treat infection. Your vet checks teeth at each wellness visit and may recommend a professional cleaning. Call sooner if you see bleeding, swelling, a broken tooth, or changes in eating. Puppies, kittens and senior pets can also benefit from a quick dental check before you start a routine.
